Happy Super Bowl Sunday friends! You might have noticed a theme this week and I’m so excited to share dad’s program from Super Bowl I, played on a January 15, 1967. If I remember correctly, this was a gift from dad’s mentor/friend Bill Schroeder who started the Helm’s Athletic Foundation and museum which was instrumental in facilitating my dad’s sports research. Check out this article on Mr. Schroeder https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1987-12-24-sp-31108-story.html.
As discussed yesterday, for as long as the @nfl has been around, the #superbowl is relatively new. And, in fact, at least officially, this game was the AFL v NFL World Championship Game. But as you can see from the press box menu, the roots of the “Super Bowl” name were already planted. Also as discussed yesterday, the AFL and NFL wouldn’t merge until 1970 and so the leagues played 3 #championship games from 1967 to 1969 as separate entities. It wasn’t until #superbowliii in 1969 that the Super Bowl name was officially adopted. But back to #superbowli, the NFL was believed to be the vastly superior league to the AFL and so it was no surprise the @packers beat the @chiefs 35-10. #greenbay QB Bart Starr was the game’s MVP but the biggest name in this game was #packers coach Vince Lombardi. #lombardi won the first two Super Bowls with the Packers after dominating the NFL before the merger. In 1970 the NFL Championship trophy was officially renamed the #lombarditrophy. All said, Super Bowl I had 20 @halloffamenfl members between the two teams.
Mr. Schroeder sat in the press box so his gift to dad included copies of the official play by play sheets for the game – unfortunately incomplete. Also included was the menu served in the press box that day with what appears to be maybe some Russian dressing stains of a 1967 vintage left behind.
