Below is the draft that led to Fiat Lux, and some insight into my own struggles:
On Campus. University of California, Irvine. (a letter, La Dispute; Wildlife, 2011)
Fiat Lux
On the patio of the law school, respectful of the strong admonition that even local attorneys are not welcome to the law library. That was where I had intended to write this. At least the title of this Peace. But, alas, I have always been told I don’t belong. Or at least that is what I always hear. And I usually listen; the first time. But as you know, what so many others see as the end, I see as just another opportunity to learn. And so I push and I push, push push push. Until I am in. I am where I intended to be. On my way. In my own way.
Fiat Lux.
Surely, I belong. It was only last year that Congressman Min and I were truly colleagues, both candidates to fill the chambers of the Legislator. Me, following in his footsteps as he pursued the next step in a marked and successful career. Him, continued success. Me?
We probably do not quite see it the same way.
Professor and Congresswoman Porter, an inspiration, but a colleague, nonetheless. Surely, we are. Both unsuccessful in our bids – goals far too lofty for each of us. Certainly, we had to see. Surely, only another lesson to be learned. A chance for reflection; an opportunity to reconnect; and perhaps less obviously, a chance to explore. Surely, I see only success for us both.
Fiat Lux
